Overview

A present-day guest travel journal. A couple books Room 314 on the third floor for a fall weekend. The spa is good. The bed is comfortable.

Then Sarah notices the lower-left fold. No one on the housekeeping team can explain who made that bed.

We didn't plan to come to Excelsior Springs. My partner found The Elms on a list of historic hotels with stories people still argue about, and I said fine, if we're doing a fall weekend somewhere it might as well be somewhere with a past.

For the record: it's a beautiful hotel. The kind that makes you immediately understand why people used to come somewhere like this for weeks at a time to do nothing but sit and take the waters and eat too much at dinner. The spa is excellent. The town is worth a walk. The beds are incredibly comfortable.

We checked in Wednesday afternoon. Our room was on the third floor — 314. Already made up beautifully when we got there, which was a little early for check-in, so I figured housekeeping had gotten ahead. But here's the thing Sarah noticed that I would have completely missed: the bed had this specific fold at the lower left corner. Like the sheet had been folded back against the mattress edge and tucked under before the drape was laid over it. She pointed it out and I could see it but honestly I would not have known what I was looking at.

She asked about it at the front desk. They sent up the housekeeper on duty — very nice, very professional — who looked at it and said she hadn't made that bed. She'd done the other rooms on the floor but not 314 yet. She wasn't sure who had.

Nobody seemed to know.

I told Sarah it was probably just an earlier shift housekeeper who finished early and didn't log it. She said maybe. She looked at the corner for another minute.

We went to dinner. The food was great. I had the beef.

October is a good time to visit. The leaves were doing their thing. I would go back.

Still Waters is a narrative series inspired by the history of The Elms Hotel & Spa in Excelsior Springs, Missouri. Each story blends documented history, local lore, and original storytelling. While many places, people, and events are rooted in the historical record, the letters, journals, conversations, and personal accounts are works of historical fiction created to bring the past to life.

Some imagery featured throughout the series is created or enhanced using artificial intelligence as a visual storytelling tool. These images are intended to help interpret a time, place, or atmosphere when authentic historical photography is unavailable and should not be viewed as archival photographs or representations of documented historical events.

Our goal is not to recreate history exactly as it happened, but to honor the people, places, and moments that shaped The Elms and the community surrounding it through stories that could have been told by those who lived them.
