The Man at the Bar

Overview

A bartender covering a shift in the lower room, written down years later. He knew the arrangement. He knew not to ask questions.

He writes the honest version. It moves fast. Then it goes quiet.

I've been asked a few times over the years what happened at The Elms that night, and I've given a few different answers depending on who was asking. This is the honest one.

I was working the lower room. Not my usual station — Eddie called in sick and F.D. asked me to cover. I hadn't worked below before. I knew what the lower room was for, and I knew the arrangement. You didn't ask questions about it.

There was a man at the bar who wasn't one of the regular party and wasn't one of ours. He'd been there since eight and he was not taking things easy. By ten he had an opinion about something that wasn't his business. The regular party did not welcome opinions.

It moved fast. I was at the far end of the bar, near the ice. I heard it more than I saw it. Then it was quiet again, and some of the men left the room together through the back passage. The man at the bar did not go with them in the way I mean when I say "go with."

F.D. came in around ten-thirty. The room was cleared and we were sent upstairs. He didn't say anything. We didn't ask anything.

What I know is that after that night, nobody who worked at The Elms went to the lower level alone after hours. It was understood. Nobody said this out loud. It was just understood.

I've been gone from the hotel thirty years. I still don't go to basements alone at night. Some things, you don't need to be told twice.

Still Waters is a narrative series inspired by the history of The Elms Hotel & Spa in Excelsior Springs, Missouri. Each story blends documented history, local lore, and original storytelling. While many places, people, and events are rooted in the historical record, the letters, journals, conversations, and personal accounts are works of historical fiction created to bring the past to life.

Some imagery featured throughout the series is created or enhanced using artificial intelligence as a visual storytelling tool. These images are intended to help interpret a time, place, or atmosphere when authentic historical photography is unavailable and should not be viewed as archival photographs or representations of documented historical events.

Our goal is not to recreate history exactly as it happened, but to honor the people, places, and moments that shaped The Elms and the community surrounding it through stories that could have been told by those who lived them.
