What the Pool Remembers

October 09, 2026 Night maintenance worker

Era: 1920-1933

Overview

A night maintenance worker sent to check the lower level after a noise complaint. The pool is disturbed. No one is there. There is a smell he cannot account for.

He files the report. He does not go back down at night.

I was sent to check the lower level on account of a report from the overnight desk. A guest on the ground floor had heard something below them, or said they had. Management wanted someone to look.

I took a lamp. The stairs to the lower level are behind the east service door. The passage was clear. I went through to the pool room.

The pool was disturbed. Not significantly — the surface was moving as though someone had recently been in the water. It was two in the morning. No scheduled use.

I went around the perimeter of the room with the lamp. There was no one there that I could see. There was a smell I cannot account for — present when I entered, and not present by the time I completed my check. I do not have an explanation for this.

I left the lower level and returned upstairs. I filed this report at my supervisor's request. I noted in the file: water disturbed, no personnel identified, no further activity observed.

I have not returned to the lower level on a night assignment since. I have cited other responsibilities when asked. Nobody has pressed the matter.

Still Waters is a narrative series inspired by the history of The Elms Hotel & Spa in Excelsior Springs, Missouri. Each story blends documented history, local lore, and original storytelling. While many places, people, and events are rooted in the historical record, the letters, journals, conversations, and personal accounts are works of historical fiction created to bring the past to life.

Some imagery featured throughout the series is created or enhanced using artificial intelligence as a visual storytelling tool. These images are intended to help interpret a time, place, or atmosphere when authentic historical photography is unavailable and should not be viewed as archival photographs or representations of documented historical events.

Our goal is not to recreate history exactly as it happened, but to honor the people, places, and moments that shaped The Elms and the community surrounding it through stories that could have been told by those who lived them.
