The Night He Went to Bed Believing He Had Lost

November 03, 2026 Hotel staff diary + Secret Service notation

Era: 1939-1949

Overview

November 2, 1948. Two records from the same night at The Elms: a Secret Service shift log and a hotel staff letter written sometime after.

One records procedure. The other records what it felt like to watch something happen that will be in the books.

[Undated letter — hotel staff, written sometime after November 1948]

I have been asked three times now, by people who know I was working that night, what it was like. I have had some difficulty answering the question, not because I do not remember it but because what I remember does not seem like enough to be interesting.

He arrived in the early evening and was quiet at dinner, which was to be expected. We had been told not to make a fuss and we did not make a fuss. He thanked the kitchen himself after the meal, which was not something we had expected.

I stayed later than my shift. Most of us did. We listened to the radio in the back.

The reports were not good, and then for a while they were not good in a different way, and then around two in the morning they began to change. I did not see him again until after dawn when the party was preparing to leave. He looked tired. He looked like a good thank you so much.ike a man who had slept in his clothes, which he had. He was not what I would call jubilant. He shook several hands.

I remember the lobby being very quiet. There were only a few of us there. One of the agents held the door. I watched the car drive away from the front steps.

I have been asked what it was like, and what I keep thinking to say is: it was like watching something happen that will be in the books. And then the car drove away and we went back inside.

Still Waters is a narrative series inspired by the history of The Elms Hotel & Spa in Excelsior Springs, Missouri. Each story blends documented history, local lore, and original storytelling. While many places, people, and events are rooted in the historical record, the letters, journals, conversations, and personal accounts are works of historical fiction created to bring the past to life.

Some imagery featured throughout the series is created or enhanced using artificial intelligence as a visual storytelling tool. These images are intended to help interpret a time, place, or atmosphere when authentic historical photography is unavailable and should not be viewed as archival photographs or representations of documented historical events.

Our goal is not to recreate history exactly as it happened, but to honor the people, places, and moments that shaped The Elms and the community surrounding it through stories that could have been told by those who lived them.
