Overview

A party arrives from Chicago by train. The senior front-of-house manager records the arrangements: room assignment, dining instructions, access protocols. He is a man who notes what happened and does not say what it means.

Room 214 appears here for the first time.

A party arrived from Chicago on the evening train. Eight in total, with two additional not staying at the hotel. Mr. Addison, the clerk who took the reservation, came to me before they arrived because the party had specified certain requirements for their stay that fell outside the standard arrangements. I told him to put them through to me directly.

The party is well-dressed. Well-staffed. They did not arrive at the front desk the way ordinary guests arrive. There was an order to it — two men came in first and looked at the lobby before the others followed. I was not asked about this arrangement but I noted it.

They have requested that Room 214 not appear on the general availability board for the duration of their stay, regardless of whether the room is occupied at any given hour. I have conveyed this to Mr. Addison. The room is reserved through Monday.

The dining arrangements are as follows: a private table for six, same position each sitting, facing the room. Service to begin ten minutes after the party is seated and not before. I have passed this to the kitchen.

The party did not come down to dinner this evening. I had a plate prepared in any case. It was not wanted.

I have made a note of the arrangements. There is nothing here that cannot be accommodated. If the Chicago party returns, I will know what is required.

Still Waters is a narrative series inspired by the history of The Elms Hotel & Spa in Excelsior Springs, Missouri. Each story blends documented history, local lore, and original storytelling. While many places, people, and events are rooted in the historical record, the letters, journals, conversations, and personal accounts are works of historical fiction created to bring the past to life.

Our goal is not to recreate history exactly as it happened, but to honor the people, places, and moments that shaped The Elms and the community surrounding it through stories that could have been told by those who lived them.
